Privacy Policy

Overview

Choppelganger is a multiplayer social deduction game built around group review questions. We collect as little data as possible. There are no user accounts, no email addresses, and no information is stored in a permanent database.

Information We Collect

Choppelganger does not collect personal identifying information such as your real name, email address, phone number, or location.

The following data is handled temporarily during gameplay:

• Display names: Players choose a nickname before joining a game. This name is shared with other players in the same session and exists only for the duration of that game. It is not stored after the session ends.
• Chat messages: Players can send short text messages during in-game discussion phases. These messages are processed in real time for content moderation (see "Content Moderation" below) and are not stored after the session ends.
• Gameplay data: In-session data such as player positions, quiz answers, and scores is held in memory on our server for the duration of the game and discarded when the session closes.
• Player reports: If a player submits a report (via the in-app Report button), the report type, a player identifier for that session, and an optional reason are logged temporarily on our server for moderation review. No personal information is included.

Content Moderation

To keep gameplay safe, all chat messages and player-chosen display names are screened by an automated content filter before being shared with other players. This filter uses two layers:

• Local filter: An on-server check for spam patterns (repeated characters, all-caps, external links, etc.).
• OpenAI Moderation API: Messages that pass the local filter are sent to OpenAI's free Moderation API (openai.com/policies/privacy-policy) to detect hate speech, harassment, and other harmful content. Messages are submitted for classification only and are not used to train OpenAI models.

Messages that are automatically blocked are retained in a short-term in-memory log (maximum 500 entries, oldest entries discarded first) accessible only to the app developer for moderation review.

AI-Generated Questions

Choppelganger includes an optional feature that allows a game host to generate quiz questions on any topic using OpenAI's GPT-4o-mini language model. When this feature is used:

• What is sent to OpenAI: Only the topic or subject text typed by the game host is transmitted to OpenAI's API. No player names, chat messages, scores, or other session data are included.
• Accuracy disclaimer: AI-generated questions are produced by a language model and may contain factual errors, inaccuracies, or outdated information. Choppelganger makes no guarantee as to the accuracy, completeness, or suitability of AI-generated content. Hosts and players should verify important facts independently.
• Not used for training: Topic queries are submitted to OpenAI for content generation only and are not used to train OpenAI models. See OpenAI's Privacy Policy.

User-uploaded question sets: Hosts may also load question sets from a CSV file they have created or obtained elsewhere. All uploaded question text is automatically scanned by a local content filter for prohibited language before questions are loaded into a game; any questions that fail this check are removed. However, Choppelganger does not manually review, verify, or endorse user-supplied content. We take no responsibility for the accuracy, appropriateness, or intellectual property status of questions uploaded by users. Hosts are solely responsible for ensuring their question sets comply with applicable laws and are appropriate for their audience.

How We Use Information

• To run multiplayer game sessions in real time
• To generate quiz questions via AI when the host uses the question-generation feature
• To filter harmful content before it is shown to other players
• To review moderation reports and blocked content for safety purposes

We do not use any in-session data for advertising, profiling, or marketing.

Data Sharing

We do not sell your data. The only third-party service that receives any game data is:

• OpenAI — receives data for two purposes: (1) chat messages and display names are submitted to OpenAI's Moderation API for harmful-content classification, and (2) when the host uses the AI question-generation feature, the topic text they enter is sent to OpenAI's GPT-4o-mini model to produce quiz questions. Game sessions are hosted on Render (render.com/privacy), a cloud infrastructure provider. In-session data resides on Render's servers for the duration of a game and is not persisted to any database.

Data Retention

No personal data is retained after a game session ends. The only data retained beyond a session is the short-term moderation log of automatically blocked messages (in-memory, maximum 500 entries, lost on server restart) and any player reports submitted via the Report button (also in-memory, lost on server restart).

Children's Privacy

Choppelganger is rated 12+ and is intended for middle school, high school, and adult group use. The app is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from any user.

Because no accounts are created and no personal information is collected, there is no user data to delete. If you have concerns, contact us at the address below.

Your Choices

Choppelganger does not set cookies, does not use device advertising identifiers, and does not run third-party analytics. You can play the game without providing any identifying information.

Changes to This Policy

If we make material changes to this policy (for example, adding new data collection or sharing), we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, provide notice within the app.
